The Yoshida Fire Festival 2023

 

It is said that there are more than 88,000 shrines in Japan. Each shrine has some festivals in a year. They usually have monthly festivals called tsukinamisai on the first day and the 15^th day of the month. Besides monthly festivals they have annual festivals.  Some are famous and others are not.

日本には88,000以上の神社があるといわれています。それぞれの神社には毎年お祭りがあります。普通1日と15日には月次祭と呼ばれるお祭りがあります。それ以外に例大祭があります。有名なものもあればそうでないものもあります。

 

I started the new e-book series “Festivals in Japan” last year when I visited Chichibu Night Festival.

昨年秩父の夜祭に行ったときに新しい”日本の祭り” シリーズを始めました。

 

This is the second e-book of the series.

これはこのシリーズ2冊目です。

 

Last Spring when I visited Arakurayama Sengen Park to see the cherry blossoms with Mt. Fuji and the 5^th story pagoda with my friend, I knew about the Fire Festival in Yoshida. Unfortunately I could not visit last year but she did and stayed overnight.

昨年春、友人と新倉山浅間公園に、富士山と五重塔と桜を見に行った時に、吉田の火祭りについて知りました。残念ながら私は行けませんでしたが、彼女は行って1泊しました。

 

This year I tried to book the hotel but could not, and I asked her to book the hotel she stayed last year, and we went together.

今年ホテルの予約をしようとしましたが、取れなかったので、彼女に昨年泊まったところを予約してもらい、一緒に行きました。

 

Yoshida no himatsuri, the Yoshida Fire Festival, is known as one of the three most unique festivals in Japan. The other two are Obi matsuri, Shimada Grand Festival, in Shimada, Shizuoka and Konomiya hadaka matsuri, Naked Festival of Owari Okunitama Shrine, in Inazawa, Aichi. There are cases that other festivals are counted.

吉田の火祭りは、日本三奇祭の一つとして知られています。他の二つは、静岡県島田市の帯祭と愛知県稲沢市の国府宮はだか祭です。他のお祭りが含まれる場合もあります。

 

The Yoshida Fire Festival is an annual festival held at Kitaguchi hongu fuji sengen jinja shrine and Suwa jinja shrine on August 26 and 27 every year to mark the end of climbing season of Mt. Fuji.

吉田の火祭りは富士山の山じまいのお祭りとして、毎年8月26日と27日に北口本宮冨士浅間神社と諏訪神社で行われます。

 

It has more than 400 years of history.

400年以上の歴史があります。

 

Day 1 is called Yoi matsuri, and Day 2 is called Hon matsuri.

初日は宵祭、2日目は本祭と呼ばれます。

I could not see all the festivals, but saw many parts.

My Trip to Tochigi: August 2023

 I love traveling.  

私は旅行が大好きです。

 

I have been to many places in my life.

私は今までの人生いろいろなところに行ってきました。

 

I like to see beautiful places and take pictures.

私は美しいところを見て、写真を撮るのが好きです。

 

Under the COVID-19 situation, we cannot travel around the world freely as we used to.

コロナ禍では、かつてのように自由に海外旅行が出来ません。

 

Therefore I have traveled around Japan instead.

だから、その代わり、私は国内を旅しています。

 

On the Day of Mountain I went to Yaita, Tochigi to see my friend. I met her at the teacher employment examination day for the first time, and met again at the newly hired teachers training next time. We started the teaching career at the same time, and finished about the same time and started our new lives.

山の日に友人に会いに栃木県矢板市に行きました。彼女とは教員採用試験の日に初めて会い、次に新採用研修で再会しました。同時期に教師になり、同じ頃退職し、次の新しい人生を始めました。

 

We have had many hobbies in common such as traveling, kimono, tea ceremony, and so on.

私たちは、旅行や着物や茶道など、同じ趣味がありました。

 

When I published my 14^th e-book titled “My Favorite Places in Venezuela: Waterfalls” (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08GZDJJ8X) in August 2020, I sent the present link to my friends. She replied, “Please come to see Oshiraji no taki (Oshiraji Waterfall) in Yaita next time.” Since that time, Oshiraji Waterfall has become one of the destinations of my trip visiting waterfalls.

We have tried to visit several times, but we could not make it until this summer.

何度か試みましたが、この夏まで行けませんでした。

 

Finally I could visit Yaita, and she took me many places, and next day we visited three waterfalls, and I published the e-book as follows.

After leaving Yaita, I went to Utsunomiya to see the fireworks festival and headed for Nikko by myself.　.

矢板を出て、花火大会を見るために宇都宮に行き、その後一人で日光に向かいました。

Waterfalls in Tochigi Vol.2: August 2023

 

I love traveling.

Especially I like visiting wonderful nature places such as mountains, woods, lakes, rivers, gorges, waterfalls, glaciers, beaches, and so on.
特に自然の素晴らしい山、森、湖、川、渓谷、滝、氷河、海岸等々を訪れるのが好きです。

One of my friends from Yaita, Tochigi replied, “Please come to see Oshiraji no taki (Oshiraji Waterfall) in Yaita next time.” Since that time, Oshiraji Waterfall has become one of the destinations of my trip visiting waterfalls.

After visiting Yaita and Utsunomiya, I went to Nikko by myself because there are some shrines and waterfalls I have wanted to visit.
矢板と宇都宮を訪問した後で、一人で日光に行きました。なぜなら、行ってみたい神社と滝がいくつかあったからです。

We have tried to visit several times, but we could not make it until this summer.
何度か試みましたが、この夏まで行けませんでした。

There are several waterfalls in Yaita, but unfortunately some promenades along the waterfalls were under construction and we could visit a few of them this time.
矢板にはいくつか滝がありますが、残念ながら、遊歩道が工事中で今回は少ししか行くことが出来ませんでした。

I heard the construction would be completed next spring. Therefore I am looking forward to visiting more waterfalls next time.
来年の春に工事が終わると聞きました。だから次回はもっとたくさんの滝を訪れたいと思っています。

This time my friends and I visited Oshiraji (Pot) Waterfall, Aka (Red) Waterfall, and Keicho (Listening) Waterfall.
今回、友人と私は、おしらじの滝、赤滝、傾聴の滝に行きました。

Unfortunately there was not much water flowing at Oshiraji Waterfall. At Aka Waterfall, I found shrines and enjoyed visiting there.
残念ながらおしらじの滝にはあまり水が流れていませんでした。赤滝には神社があり、行けて良かったです。

My Trip to Western Tokyo: July 2023

 I love traveling.

私は旅行が大好きです。

I have been to many places in my life.

東京と聞くと何を思い浮かべますか？

Tokyo is the capital of Japan, and the center of politics, economics, culture, information, academic, art, entertainment, and so on.
東京は日本の首都で、政治、経済、文化、情報、学問、芸術、エンターテイメント等々の中心です。

There are so many restaurants of various foods around the world, modern skyscrapers, traditional buildings and many touristic places to visit.
世界中の様々な料理のレストランがあり、近代的な高層ビルもあれば、伝統的な建築物や沢山の観光地があります。

It is a big city, but there are islands and wonderful nature places too.
大都市ですが、島もあるし素晴らしい自然もあるのです。

Last summer on the Day of Mountain I went to Mt. Mitake in Tokyo with my friends to see the mountain flower called Rengeshoma and eat mountain foods for the first time, and visited a waterfall. I published about the trip as follows.

This summer I had another chance to see the night Kagura performances at Musashi Mitake jinja shrine for two nights.
この夏武蔵御嶽神社で再び夜神楽を2回見る機会がありました。

I hoped to try takigyo, ablutions standing under waterfall there but could not book and I visited waterfalls in Hinohara village to do takigyo before visiting Mt. Mitake. I published about the trip as follows.
そこで滝行をしたかったのですが、予約が取れなかったので、御岳山に行く前に檜原村の滝を訪れ滝行をしました。その時の写真集がこちらです。

After all this time I visited Mt. Mitake to see the night Kagura performances for two nights, climbed four mountains (Mt. Mitake, Oku no in ho, Mt. Nabewari, Mt. Otake), and visited two waterfalls (Ayahiro waterfall, Nanayo waterfall). Pictures of two waterfalls are as follows.

Sunlight: July 2023

 I love to see beautiful things and take pictures.

私は美しいものを見て写真を撮るのが好きです。

I like to take pictures of sunlight through trees, clouds, and other things.
私は木漏れ日を撮るのが好きです。

When I take pictures at the sacred places like shrines and temples, I can take wonderful light pictures without realizing.
神社仏閣のような神聖な場所で写真を撮ると、気づかぬうちに素晴らしい光の写真が撮れていることがあります。
