Mifune Matsuri 2026: Once in 12 Years Festival

 It is said that there are more than 88,000 shrines in Japan. Each shrine has some festivals in a year. They usually have monthly festivals called tsukinamisai on the first day and the 15^th day of the month. Besides monthly festivals they have annual festivals.  Some are famous and others are not.

日本には88,000以上の神社があるといわれています。それぞれの神社には毎年お祭りがあります。普通1日と15日には月次祭と呼ばれるお祭りがあります。それ以外に例大祭があります。有名なものもあればそうでないものもあります。

 

I started the new e-book series “Festivals in Japan” in 2022 when I visited Chichibu Night Festival.

2022年に秩父の夜祭に行ったときに新しい「日本の祭り」 シリーズを始めました。

 

This is the sixth e-book of the series.

これはこのシリーズ6冊目です。

 

Last year when I visited three shrines in East Country for the second time, I knew there would be once in twelve years festival on September 1 and 2 this year. I felt like visiting there by all means.

昨年2回目の東国三社巡りをした時に、今年の9月1日と2日に12年に一度のお祭りがあることを知りました。是非行ってみたいと思いました。

 

I took two days off and went to see the Mifune Matsuri festival.

2日間休みを取り、御船祭を見に行ってきました。

Visiting 3 Shrines in Eastern Country: Togoku Sansha Meguri

 I have wanted to introduce Japanese culture to enhance the mutual understanding between Japan and other countries which would lead to the world peace and started publishing “Things Japanese” series since May 2019.

私は日本と諸外国との相互理解が世界平和につながると信じ日本文化を紹介したいと思い、2019年5月から『日本のこと』というシリーズを出版してきました。

I often visit shrines and temples, so I started “Pilgrimage” series in January 2024.
よく神社仏閣に行くので「巡礼」シリーズを2024年1月から始めました。

I visited 34 Kannon in Chichibu in October and November 2014.
私は2014年10月と11月に秩父の三十四観音霊場を回りました。

This was the first experience for me to visit a series of temples.
これが一連の寺社を巡礼する最初の経験でした。

I hope to publish about this experience some day.
いつかこのことを本にしたいと思います。

From December 2014 to May 2015, I visited 88 temples in Shikoku.
2014年12月から2015年5月まで、四国の八十八カ所巡りをしました。

I hope to publish about this experience some day too.
この経験についてもいつか出版したいです。

They say if you go around from No. 1 to No. 88, it is called “Jun uchi (regular visiting).”
1番から88番の順で回ると「順打ち」と呼ばれます。

If you visit from No. 88 to No. 1, it is called “Gyaku uchi (reverse order visiting.”)
もし88番から1番の順番で回ると「逆打ち」と呼ばれます。

If you do “Gyaku uchi” in a leap year, they say the blessings you receive will be three times as great as usual.
もしうるう年に逆打ちで回るとご利益は3倍になると言われています。

It is very difficult to complete even once; there are many people who have visited there for many times.
一度でさえ、結願するのはとても難しいのに、何度も巡礼している人たちがいます。

I cannot do many times, but if I have a chance, I want to try Gyaku uchi next time.
何度も巡礼することはできませんが、もし機会があれば、逆打ちは一度やってみたいです。

I have visited 10 Shrines in Tokyo, 5 great Benzaitens four times, Kinkasan for four years straight visit, 3 shrines in Togoku Area for three times, 3 shrines in Jomo Area, 3 shrines of Munakata taisha, 3 shrines in Niukawakami jinja, and so on.
私は東京十社巡り、4回の五大弁財天巡り、四年連続の金華山参り、3回の東国三社参り、上毛三社参り、宗像三社巡り、丹生川上神社三社参りなどに行ったことがあります。

I make a rule to visit Ise grand shrine from the New Year’s Eve of the lunar calendar to New Year’s Day, and Izumo okami yashiro in the Kamiarizuki every year.
毎年旧暦の大晦日から新年にかけては伊勢神宮に、神在月には出雲大社に行くようにしています。

 I love to see beautiful things and take pictures.

Lotus: 2026

I have started publishing sunlight pictures as “Beautiful Nature Series” since May 2022.
私は光の写真集を「美しい自然シリーズ」として2022年5月から出版してきました。

I decided to start a new series of flower pictures as “Graceful Nature Series” to celebrate my birthday in May 2026.
誕生日記念に新たな「優雅なる自然シリーズ」として花の写真集を出すことにしました。

Most of Japanese people love Sakura, cherry blossoms. Therefore, the first book was about Sakura, cherry blossoms.
ほとんどの日本人は桜が大好きです。だから最初の本は桜にしました。

To my glad this book became No. 1 in the USA and Japan.
嬉しいことにこの本は日米で1位になりました。

Most women love roses. Therefore, the second book was about roses.
ほとんどの女性は薔薇が大好きです。ですから2冊目は薔薇の本にしました。

Thankfully, this book became No. 1 in the USA, Canada, and Japan.
ありがたいことにこの本は日米加で1位になりました。

I chose hydrangea, a hallmark of the rainy season, as the third book.
3冊目として、梅雨の風物詩、紫陽花を選びました。

Fortunately, it became No.1 in the USA, Canada, and Japan.
幸運なことに日米加で1位になりました。

In summer there are flowers I would like to see.
夏に見たいお花があります
One of them is Lotus.
そのうちの一つが蓮です。

During the Golden week when I visited a temple, they were selling the seeds of lotus. Therefore, I tried growing them. They were really hard seeds, and it was tough to scrape the bottom of it, but I somehow managed to do it. After soaking them in water and keeping an eye on them, the sprout soon appeared and the stem started growing. Roots came out then small leaves started to appear. I planted them in pots as I was told at that stage, but unfortunately, they ended up dying.
ゴールデンウィークにあるお寺を訪ねたとき、蓮の種を売っていました。だから育ててみたいと思いました。とても固い種で、種の底を削るのが大変でしたが、何とか削り、水につけ様子を見たら、ほどなくして、芽が出て、茎が伸びて根が出て、小さな葉っぱが出てきました。いわれた通り、その段階で鉢植えしてみましたが、残念ながら枯れてしまいました。

Several years ago, I went to Gyoda city in Saitama prefecture to see the Ancient Lotus. They were so beautiful.
数年前に、埼玉県の行田市に古代蓮を見に行ったことがあります。素晴らしかったです。

A few years ago, I went to Yaita city in Tochigi prefecture to see the Lotus which were also nice.
数年前に栃木県矢板市に蓮を見に行きましたが、それも良かったです。

Every summer there are two places I go to see Lotus. They are Ueno and Kamakura.
毎年夏に蓮を見に行く場所が2カ所あります。上野と鎌倉です。

I had chances to go there twice this summer respectively.
この夏それぞれ2回行く機会がありました。

My Trip to Manazuru: July 2026

 I love traveling.

私は旅行が大好きです。

I have been to many places in my life.
私は今までの人生いろいろなところに行ってきました。

I happened to know that there would be Kibune Matsuri in Manazuru from July 24 to 25, which is one of the three greatest boat festivals in Japan, by the Facebook post of my friend who has a guest house there.
7月24日から25日に日本三大船祭りの一つである真鶴貴船祭りがあることを真鶴にゲストハウスを持つFacebookの友人の投稿で知りました。

I felt like going to see it and asked my friend.
見に行きたくなって、友人に問い合わせました。

She said she had a room; therefore, I decided to visit.
部屋は空いているということで見に行くことにしました。

Hydrangeas are native to Japan and bloom from May to July.
紫陽花は日本原産で、5月から7月に咲きます。

There are many colors: blue, purple, red, pink, white and so on. The colored parts that look like flowers are not actually flowers, but modified leaves called calyx. The change in the color of the calyx is related to the soil’s pH level. If the soil is acidic, the calyx turns blue: if it is alkaline, it turns reddish: and if it is neutral, it turns purplish.
青、紫、赤、ピンク、白などなどいろいろな色があります。花に見えているところは実は花ではなく、ガクと呼ばれる葉っぱが変形したものです。ガクの色が変わるのは土壌のpH値が関係しています。土壌のpH値が酸性の場合は青色、pH値がアルカリ性の場合は赤系、中性の場合は紫系になります。

There are mainly 3 types of hydrangeas: Honajisai, Gakuajisai, Seiyo-ajisai. But they say there are more than 2,000 varieties worldwide.
主に3タイプ（ホンアジサイ、ガクアジサイ、セイヨウアジサイ）ありますが、現在では世界中で2000種類以上の品種があるようです。
