My Trip to Chikubushima Island: September 2025

When I decided to go to Nara and EXPO 2025 for the 8th times in September, I was wondering how to go and where else to go.
9月に奈良と8回目の万博に行くことを決めたとき、どうやって行こうか、他にどこに行こうかと考えていました。

There are so many places to go in Kansai.
関西にはとてもたくさん行くところがあるのです。

I decided to take a night bus to Kyoto, and take a train and a boat to Chikubushima Island in Shiga where I wanted to visit within this year.
夜行バスで京都まで行き、電車と船に乗り、今年中に行っておきたかった滋賀県の竹生島に行くことにしました。

Since this is the Year of the Snake, I definitely wanted to visit Chikubushima Island where is one of the Five Great Benzaiten Shrines.
今年は巳年なので、どうしても五大弁財天の一つの竹生島に行っておきたかったのです。

Visiting 5 Shrines in Nara: September 2025

 I love traveling.

私は旅行が大好きです。

When I planned to travel Kansai this summer, there were some shrines I wanted to visit but could not because of the limited time.
この夏に関西への旅行を計画した時、いくつか行きたい神社があったのですが、時間の関係で行けませんでした。

They were located in Nara prefecture and it was very difficult to visit by public transportations.
それらは奈良県にあり、公共交通機関を使って訪れるのはとても難しかったのです。

When I visited the website of the shrines, I happened to find a good bus tour which was held on Sunday, therefore I decided to join the tour with my friend who also wanted to visit there in summer.
神社のホームページを見ていた時に、たまたま日曜日に開催されるバスツアーを見つけたので、その神社に夏に一緒に行きたかった友人と参加することにしました。

Sunlight: September 2025

My Trip to Yamanashi by Bus Tour: September 2025

In March I went to Yamanashi by bus tour. At that time, I enjoyed strawberry picking very much so that I felt like going to cherry or biwa or Shine Muscat picking next time.
3月に山梨にバスツアーに行きました。その時いちご狩りがとても楽しかったので、次回はさくらんぼか枇杷かマスカット狩りに行きたいと思っていました。

I booked for cherry picking tour, but unfortunately, it was cancelled due to the minimum number of participants not being reached.
さくらんぼ狩りツアーを予約しましたが、残念なことに、最少催行人数に達せず、キャンセルとなりました。

I tried to find other tours, and fortunately I could find the cheaper one held on Saturday, June 14, 2025 and decided to join that tour held by another company.
他のツアーを探してみたところ、幸運なことに、2025年6月14日（土）にもっと安いツアーを見つけることができたので、他の会社のツアーに参加してみることにしました。

It was another good tour.

When my first desired tour was cancelled, I transferred to another tour in September to enjoy packing my favorite sweets named Shingenmochi and eating Shine Muscat as much as I want to.
最初の行きたかったさくらんぼ狩りツアーがキャンセルになった時、9月のシャインマスカット狩り食べ放題・信玄餅詰め放題のツアーに振り替えました。

My Trip by Boat: Summer 2025

Every mode has merits and demerits.
すべでの方法に良い点と悪い点があります。

Have you ever tried “Mystery tours”?
“ミステリーツアー”って行ったことがありますか？

I have been interested in, but I have never tried until this summer.
興味はありましたが、この夏まで行ったことがありませんでした。

I happened to know that there is a special ticket called “Mystery Ticket” issued by Tokai Kisen Co., Ltd. It is an overnight round trip to either one of the five islands in Tokyo which you can buy for yen8,800 but you do not know the destination until the day you change to the boarding pass.
東海汽船が発行している“ミステリーきっぷ”というのをたまたま知りました。
8,800円で買えて、東京の5つの島のうちのどれかに行ける夜行日帰りの往復切符なのですが、当日乗船券に引き換えるまで行き先がわからないのです。

It leaves at Takeshiba, Tokyo at 23:00 at night and comes back at 19:00 next day.
東京の竹芝桟橋を夜の11時に出発して、翌日の夜7時に戻ってきます。

Destinations are either Oshima or Toshima or Niijima or Shikinejima or Kozushima.
目的地は、大島か利島か新島か式根島か神津島です。

It arrives at Oshima at 6 AM and leaves there at 14:30, so you can stay for about 8 hours and a half.
大島には朝6時に着き、14:30に出航するので約8時間半いられます。

It arrives at Toshima at 7:40 and leaves there at 12:50, so you can stay for about 5 hours and 10 minutes.
利島には7:40に着き、12:50に出航するので、約5時間10分いられます。

It arrives at Niijima at 8:35 and leaves there at 11:55, so you can stay for about 3 hours and 20 minutes.
新島には8:35に着き、11:55に出航するので、約3時間20分いられます。

It arrives at Shikinejima at 9:05 and leaves there at 11:25, so you can stay for about 2 hours and 20 minutes.
式根島には9:05に着き11:25に出航するので約2時間20分いられます。

It arrives at Kozushima at 10:00 and leaves there at 10:30, so you can only stay for half an hour.
神津島には10時に着き10時半には出航するので、わずか30分しかいられません。

I have been to only Oshima among these 5 islands, however it was March 5, 1989, that is more than 36 years ago. So, for me it was OK to go to any of these islands.
私はこの5島の中では大島だけ行ったことがありましたが、1989年3月5日のことなので、36年以上前になります。だからどの島になったとしてもいいと思っていました。

If you go to Oshima by normal 2nd class ticket, it would cost yen 5,610 for one way.
もし大島に2等の通常の切符で行ったなら、片道5,610円かかります。

If you go to Toshima, it would cost yen 6,250.
もし利島だったら、片道6250円です。

If you go to Niijima and Shikinejima, it would cost yen 7,560.
もし新島や式根島だったら、片道7,560円です。

If you go to Kozushima, it would cost yen 8,010.
もし神津島だったら、片道8,010円です。

That means, in any way, it is rather cheap than the regular price.
つまり、どこに行ったとしても通常より安いわけです。

I decided to give it a try as a test of luck.
運試しをしてみることにしました。

I invited some friends and one of them wanted to join and we decided to go on Sunday, August 31, 2025.
何人かに声をかけ、そのうちの一人が行きたいと言ってくれたので、2025年8月31日(日)に行くことにしました。

Every spring, summer, and winter JR sells special tickets called Seishun 18 kippu which you can ride all local trains around Japan for any 5 days within the period by yen12,050. You could use by yourself and with your friends too.
春、夏、冬にJRが青春18きっぷという日本中の普通列車に期間内のいずれか5日間12,050円で乗り放題の切符を販売します。一人で使っても友人と使ってもよかったのです。

When the season comes, I feel like traveling by using that special ticket.
季節が来ると、その特別な切符を使って旅をしたくなります。

Since last time the rule of the ticket has been changed unfortunately.
前回から切符のルールが残念ながら変わってしまいました。

You can travel consecutive 5 days by yourself for yen12,050.

I have thought and thought where to go and listed up the places I wished to go.
どこに行こうか考えに考え、行きたいところをいろいろリストアップしました。

The main target places were the Akame 48 falls in Mie and EXPO 2025 in Osaka.
主な目的地は、三重県の赤目四十八滝と大阪のEXPO2025でした。

So, I picked up some other places on my way to and from.
そこで、行きと帰りに行くところを選びました。

On the first day I decided to visit a temple in Okazaki, Aichi, and invited my cousins who live near there to have dinner.
初日は愛知県岡崎市のお寺に行くことにしたので、近隣に住んでいる従妹たちに声をかけ食事をすることにしました。

On the second day, I went to the Akame 48 falls in Mie, and had dinner with Facebook friends in Nara.
2日目は三重県の赤目四十八滝に行き、Facebook上の奈良県の友人と食事をしました。

On the third day, I visited the Nara National Museum and the Kasuga Taisha shrine and went to Osaka to visit EXPO 2025. This was the 6th visit there.
3日目には奈良国立博物館と春日大社に行き、大阪に向かいEXPO2025 に行きました。6回目でした。

On the fourth day, I visited the EXPO 2005 for the 7th times and had an unforgettable experience.
4日目は7回目のEXPOに行き、忘れられない経験をしました。

On the fifth day, I came back home via Owari Ichinomiya, Aichi to visit the Masumida jinja shrine, and Bentenjima island in Shizuoka.
5日目は愛知県尾張一宮の真清田神社と静岡県の弁天島に寄って、帰宅しました。
