Cherry Blossom Festival: 2025

 There are many festivals in Japan.

日本にはたくさんのお祭りがあります。

Most of them are related with religion.
そのほとんどは宗教に関連しています。

However there are other types of festivals too.
しかし他の種類のお祭りもあります。

Some of them are related with flowers.
そのいくつかは花に関連しています。

Most of Japanese people love cherry blossoms. In March the weather forecast will predict the blooming of the cherry blossoms, and we are looking forward to viewing them.
ほんどの日本人は桜が大好きです。3月になると天気予報は開花予想をし、私たちはお花見を楽しみにします。

There are many kinds of cherry blossoms, but in this case it means Somei yoshino. We can enjoy them about a week or two.
沢山の桜の種類がありますが、この場合は、ソメイヨシノを指します。1～2週間楽しめます。

In my area there is a cherry blossoms festival from early February to early March. These cherry blossoms are called Kawazu zakura and it is bright pink and last longer.
私の住んでいるところでは、2月上旬から3月上旬に桜まつりがあります。この桜は河津桜と言い、濃いピンクで、長く咲きます。

Every spring I walk between two stations and enjoy seeing about the 1000 cherry blossom trees once or twice. I often enjoy viewing from the window of the trains.
私は毎春1～2回、2つの駅の間を歩き約1000本のこの桜を楽しみます。よく電車の中から楽しみます。

This spring blooming was late and the festival was extended one more week until March 9.
この春は開花が遅れ、お祭りが1週間延び3月9日までやっていました。

I walked more times than usual.
いつもより多く歩きました。

Sunlight: February 2025

 I love to see beautiful things and take pictures.

When I take pictures at the sacred places like shrines and temples, I can take wonderful light pictures without realizing.
神社仏閣のような神聖な場所で写真を撮ると、気づかぬうちに素晴らしい光の写真が撮れていることがあります。

Ushitenjin Plum Dedication Festival: From 2020 to 2025

 It is said that there are more than 88,000 shrines in Japan. Each shrine has some festivals in a year. They usually have monthly festivals called tsukinamisai on the first day and the 15th day of the month. Besides monthly festivals they have annual festivals. Some are famous and others are not.

日本には88,000以上の神社があるといわれています。それぞれの神社には毎年いくつかのお祭りがあります。普通1日と15日には月次祭と呼ばれるお祭りがあります。それ以外に例大祭があります。有名なものもあればそうでないものもあります。

I started the new e-book series “Festivals in Japan” in 2023 when I visited Chichibu Night Festival in 2022.
2022年秩父の夜祭に行ったときに新しい「日本の祭り」 シリーズを2023年から始めました。

This is the third e-book of the series.
これはこのシリーズ3冊目です。

I would like to introduce “Kenbaisai” (Plum Dedication Festival) of Ushitenjin Kitano jinja shrine in Tokyo.
東京の牛天神北野神社の献梅祭についてご紹介したいと思います。

This shrine enshrines Sugawara Michizane, the famous god of learning, and was founded by Minamoto no Yoritomo in 1184. Michizane loved and cherished plum blossoms. To let everyone know every year Red Plum Festival is held.
この神社は1184年に源頼朝によって、学問の神様として有名な天神様藤原道真公を祀るために創建されました。道真公は梅の花を愛され、いとおしまれていました。そのことを知ってもらうために毎年牛天神紅梅まつりが催されています。

Kenbaisai, Plum Dedication Festival is held either on the second Sunday or the third Sunday during the Red Plum Festival at the Kitano jinja shrine. Time and date of the festival depends on the blooming of the plum blossoms.
献梅祭は紅梅まつり期間中、第2日曜または第3日曜日に開催されます。お祭りの日時は梅の咲き具合によります。

From 11 AM to 4 PM Nodate (open-air tea ceremony) and Tenjin drum performances are held in the precincts of the shrine, and Amazake (sweet sake) and Tonjiru (pork miso soup) are served.
午前11時から午後4時の間には境内において、野点や天神太鼓を行い、甘酒や豚汁がふるまわれます。

Visitors who receive a red seal, amulet, or votive card receive plum wine which was made from plums harvested on the shrine grounds and aged for 5 to 10 years.
御朱印、御守り、御札などをお受けいただいた方は神社の境内で取れた梅の実を5～10年寝かせた梅酒をいただけます。

After the ceremony at 1:30 PM and dedication of Tenjin drum performance a sprig of ume (limited to 200, one per person) is given away.
午後１:30からの式典と天神太鼓奉納の後、梅の小枝（一人一枝、限定200名）がいただけます。

I have been to this festival for four times in 2020, 2023, 2024, and 2025.
私はこのお祭りに2020年、2023年、2024年、2025年の4回行ったことがあります。

My Trip to Chichibu by Bus Tour: February 2025

 I love traveling.

私は旅行が大好きです。

I have been to many places in my life.
私は今までの人生いろいろなところに行ってきました。

I like to see beautiful places and take pictures.
私は美しいところを見て、写真を撮るのが好きです。

When I went to Tanashi on January 5, 2025, I took the Seibu railway and happened to see the poster of Icicles of Ashigakubo and felt like visiting there.
2025年1月5日に田無に行った時、西武鉄道に乗り、たまたまあしがくぼの氷柱のポスターを見て、行きたくなりました。

I was going to see the last week of lighting up there and asked some friends.
ライトアップをしている最後の週に行こうと思って、何人かに声をかけてみました。

However, I found a very nice tour which I wished to join before.
しかし、以前行きたいと思っていた素晴らしいツアーを見つけました。

So I decided to attend this tour with a friend who was available on February 11, 2025.
そこで、2025年2月11日に都合のついた友人と行くことにしました。

It was a national holiday called Kenkoku kinen no hi, National Foundation Day.
建国記念日でした。

It was a special day there. There was the ceremony to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the merger of Yokoze Village with Ashigakubo Village and the 40th anniversary of the town’s incorporation.
そこでは特別な日でした。横瀬村が芦ヶ久保村と合併して70周年、町制施行して40周年の記念式典が行われていました。

The bus tour started from Yokoze station at 11:30 AM and finished at Seibu Chichibu station around 7 PM visiting three icicle places and a sake brewery with lunch.
バスツアーは11時半に横瀬駅を出発し、夜7時頃西武秩父駅に戻り、3ヶ所の氷柱と酒造を訪れ、昼食付でした。

It cost yen 10,000.
1万円でした。

I left home before seven and came back before midnight.
朝7時前に家を出て、真夜中に帰宅しました。

My Trip to Ise Vol. 5: January 2025

 I love traveling.

私は旅行が大好きです。

I have been to many places in my life.
私は今までの人生いろいろなところに行ってきました。

I like to see beautiful places and take pictures.
私は美しいところを見て、写真を撮るのが好きです。

I have been to Ise many times in my life.
私は伊勢に何度も行ったことがあります。

For the past five years I went there at the time of the New Year’s Eve and the New Year’s Day of the lunar calendar to attend a special tour to visit Ise Grand Shrine.
過去五年間は特別な伊勢神宮参拝ツアーに参加するために旧暦の大みそかと新年に行っています。

Ise Grand shrine consists of 125 shrines but we mainly visit two of them: Geku, the outer shrine, which is also known as Toyouke Daijingu, and Naiku, the inner shrine, which is also known as Kotai Jingu.
伊勢神宮は、125宮からなりますが、私たちは主に二つの神社を訪問します。外宮あるいは豊受大神宮と内宮あるいは皇大神宮です。

To visit Ise jingu shrine has been called O Ise mairi for a long time, and it was once in a life time experience for the people of the Edo era or so.
伊勢神宮にお参りすることは長いことお伊勢参りと呼ばれていて、江戸時代位の人々にとっては、一生に一度の経験でした。

Even today Ise is rather far from my place.
今日でも、伊勢は私のところからは遠いです。

Therefore when I visit there I try to visit other places on my way there or on my way back.
ですから私は伊勢に行くときには、行きや帰りに他のところにも寄るようにしています。

I usually go there for 5 or 6 days to attend the special tour.
私はそのツアーに参加するときは大抵5日か6日かけて伊勢に行きます。

Takeyama Hiking: March 2024

 I was born in Yokosuka and grew up in Miura, Kanagawa, Japan.

私は日本の神奈川県横須賀生まれ、三浦育ちです。

I went to a high school in Yokosuka.
私は横須賀の高校に行きました。

It was a very unique one.
とてもユニークな高校でした。

There was no class change nor teacher in charge for three years. We had 70-minute classes though other schools usually have 50-minute classes. If a class in the middle of the day was cancelled, a class committee member would go to the teacher of the last class to negotiate to move it up so that we could leave early.
3年間クラス替えがなく、担任も同じでした。通常他校は50分授業だと思いますが、私たちの学校は70分授業でした。 もし途中の授業が休講になるとクラス委員が最後の授業の先生のところに交渉に行き、繰り上げてもらって、早く帰れるようにしていました。

The gymnastic festival was famous, and each class from the first year to the third year combined for 10 colors. We made big decorations to change the pictures at the back of the cheerleading squad and competed in painting. The second year and the third year was the same color to succeed the tradition. We made costumes too.
体育祭が有名で、1年から3年まで1クラスずつが組んで10色ありました。応援席の後ろに大きな2種類のパネルのデコレーションを作り、絵を競い合いました。2年次と3年次は伝統を引き継ぐために同じ色でした。衣裳も作りました。

My class was relatively close and we had a year-end party every year and about 10 out of 45 members got together.
私のクラスは比較的仲が良く、毎年45人中10人くらいが集まって忘年会を開いていました。

Last year in January we had a new year’s party after four years or so.
昨年1月に4年ぶりくらいで集まり新年会をしました。

At that time we decided to get together more and climb the low-mountains to keep healthy.
その時に、健康のために、低山ハイキングをしようということになり、定期的に集まるようになりました。

Last year we got together 6 times and enjoyed hiking.
昨年6回集まりハイキングを楽しみました。

So I decided to introduce the hiking courses we had taken as the new series.
そこで、新しいシリーズでハイキングコースを紹介することにしました。
